Tanning has had a chequered history in fashion terms. Historically a sun tan was frowned upon by the upper classes as a sign of working outdoors, primarily a working class pursuit. By the 1940s and 1950s, sunbathing was a popular leisure time pursuit. Women’s fashions were changing too, with the area the swimsuit covered gradually diminishing until the arrival of the bikini.
